What should I do about my dead-beat cousin, who is living on my couch?
He’s supposed to pay 1/3 of the rent and utilities, but doesn’t. He spends money on collectors edition dvd sets, but doesnt pay his share. Our electric bill has jumped up since he moved in cause he plays video games all night long. He is also rude. When he called once, I saw it was him on caller ID and handed it to my bf and told him to answer it and tell my cousin that we were naked. My bf told him that, as a joke it wasnt true, and my cousin was like ’so? let me talk to her’.
By letting him live off you you’re not helping him. If you truly want to help him gain control and responsibility you need to kick him out. You’re obviously really nice and caring but there are alot of people who take advantage of people like you. Do him a favour and put a time limit on how long he stays. In that time his new “job” is to look for one, and if he doesn’t that is an obvious sign of how much he respects your efforts and patience. He won’t do anything unless he knows your serious. You’ve been kind, welcoming, and supportive. You don’t owe him anything else. You really are making his situation worse and doing more damage than good by letting him stay. It’s hard to push people away, but letting him live off you isn’t helping him grow and develop into a self reliant capable adult. The longer it takes him to take control of his own life the harder it will be for him.
